Marites Buhain: Welder

In the non-conventional, egalitarian society we live in today, Marites Buhain is a cut above the rest. Proud to be admired in a craft dominated by males and a genius behind her welding equipment, Marites is one of the rare treasures of EEI Corporation. With her on board the team as a TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welder, EEI is well-assured of producing high quality industrial steel products and modules for its local and international clients.

Being the eldest daughter in her family, her father a driver and her mother a housewife, Marites learned to be responsible at an early point in her life. During vacations, she would sell halo-halo and assist in the harvesting of crops to earn money for her education. She was able to enroll in college in a BS-Accounting course but had to stop due to their financial situation.

She then became interested in working as a welder when she met several lady welders working in EEI. It never intimidated her that it was a male dominated workforce. "Kaya ng babae ang pagwewelding," she says with utmost vigor. Determined to develop her proficiency in welding, she took a vocational course on Welding and Steel Fabrication at Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) IV-A Regional Training Center in Batangas. After finishing, she was accepted for an OJT position at EEI to train further and to hone her skills. The untimely death of her father pushed her into the challenge of being the breadwinner in the family. This motivated her to work hard so that she could support her mother and siblings, "kapag naranasan mo ang hirap, matututo ka talaga sa buhay. Nagsikap, nagtiyaga, at nagtiis talaga ako," she shares. The proudest moments in her life were seeing her siblings graduate one by one knowing that she was the one who sent them to school.

Marites takes pride in being a welder. Never at any point in her life did she regret pursuing this profession. She considers herself lucky to have gone through the several stages of being a welder starting with the basics as a trainee, starting as a Gas Welder, subsequently climbing her way up the ranks by qualifying as a multi-skilled welder, and later as a TIG welder. Now in EEI for already 18 years, Marites still continues to learn new techniques and gain experience not only from EEI's rigorous skills training, but also from her teammates with whom she works everyday. With the skills that she has acquired over the years, she in turn shares her extensive knowledge of the craft, and mentors the less experienced.

Grateful to EEI for providing her with the opportunities to master her craft and grow in her career, she gives back by performing her work excellently. Marites showed remarkable performance in assembling modules in the EEI Steel Fabrication Shop for its foreign projects when her volume output exceeded the average output of a welder while achieving an acceptance rate of 99.92%. The high throughput with minimal rejection rate resulted in increased production and contributed significantly towards early completion of the project. At this point in time, she expresses her content with being a TIG welder, however if opportunity knocks and challenges her to a higher level, she will give it a go without thinking twice.

During EEI's 79th Anniversary celebration, Marites was recognized as one of the Most Outstanding Employees of the Year. Surprised but deserved, Marites is proud knowing that she worked tirelessly and patiently to be where she is now, "Tiyaga lang ang naging puhunan ko. Minahal ko ang trabaho ko kaya masaya ako kung nasaan ako ngayon. Hindi ako nagsawa sa paghintay ng patuloy na pag-unlad." Working in EEI opened doors revealing great opportunities for Marites. With 18 years of hard work and perseverance, like coal under immense pressure and time, she became the diamond that she is today and truly is a treasure of EEI Corporation.

Joseph Capili: Welder

"I am proud of my job as a welder," says Joseph Capili, who is a picture of passionate and effortless concentration as he skillfully welds together various metal elements forming a complex network of steel structures and pipes.

From being an assistant welder in EEI Corporation's Steel Fabrication Shop in Batangas, Joseph is now a TIG welder, tasked to assemble modules of engineered steel structural, electro-mechanical, and process facilities that are shipped domestically and abroad for the company's local and international clients. Joseph has been an outstanding welder and a loyal employee to EEI for almost 20 years now; and as a testament to his remarkable performance, dedication, and commitment, he was also recognized as one of EEI's Most Outstanding Employees of the year.

Coming from a family of seven, his father being a humble carpenter and his mother a loving housewife, Joseph at a very young age was already driven to work hard and take on whatever jobs he could manage in order to boost his family's income while balancing these with his academics. Amazingly, he was able to graduate with a Diploma of Technology - Welding and Fabrication from Bataan National School for Arts and Trade.

During his application for a regular job in EEI, Joseph stood out among the rest. Aside from being just a college student then, he was also one of the only three (out of several) who passed the series of difficult applied tests conducted by EEI. He demonstrated that he had the necessary skills and talent to be accepted.

Starting as an assistant welder, he worked diligently in several projects. As he gained experience, he then trained to become a pipe welder and further studied the ropes of TIG welding. Through his hard work and desire to learn, he acquired more skills, worked his way up the ladder, and eventually became a certified TIG welder. Joseph's work habits are worth emulating. He values teamwork and is very supportive of his peers. To his teammates, he is a mentor as he shares with them his welding expertise, and to his superiors he is an adviser to any task that needs to be undertaken.

Joseph values his job in EEI as this career enabled him to support his entire family - his wife and daughter, and even his parents and siblings. He says, "Ang trabaho ko sa EEI ang nagbubuhay sa aking pamilya. Malaki ang utang na loob ko dito at gusto kong suklian iyon sa paggawa ng tama, at sa pagpangalaga at pagpahalaga ng relasyon ko sa EEI." Joseph always strives to achieve his personal target of zero rejection and performs exceptionally to meet, if not exceed, the expected production standards. In a recent assignment doing welding work in a module fabrication project for a foreign client, his weld quality had a near perfect acceptance rate of 99.92%! This performance contributed significantly to increased production and faster completion of the project and portrayed the kind of work ethic and excellence that EEI offers to its clients.

Twenty years of zealous work, perseverance and determination have paid off as Joseph was awarded as one of EEI's Most Outstanding Employees during its 79th Anniversary Celebration. He believes that this award is one of the fruits of his labor. Joseph incessantly strives to do his best and be a master at his skills, and promises to sustain this kind of work performance for as long as he is able.
